Athens, Greece
Start your day with breakfast before heading to the captivating region of Meteora. Known for its towering rock formations and centuries-old monasteries, it’s no wonder this UNESCO World Heritage site is a cultural gem. Originally home to monks who sought solitude in the 11th century, the monasteries were built on the highest, seemingly unreachable peaks to provide sanctuary. Back then, the only way up was by wooden ladders or nets that could be raised and lowered. Though modern paths and steps now make access easier, you’ll still see the old nets used to bring up supplies to the monasteries. Of the original twenty-four, only six are still active. During your visit, you’ll explore two of these breathtaking retreats, immersed in their history and stunning views. After departing Meteora, the journey continues to the charming town of Kalambaka for a traditional lunch. On the way back to Athens, pay homage at the Thermopylae monument, honoring the legendary King Leonidas. Your evening ends with an overnight stay at the elegant St. George Lycabettus Hotel, where you can unwind and enjoy leisure time. Please note: Modest attire is required to visit the monasteries. Ladies must wear skirts below the knee and cover their shoulders. Men should wear long trousers and also have their shoulders covered.
